CAROL SINGING COMES EARLY IN SALISBURY CATHEDRAL!

All 54 members of St Martin’s Primary School Choir visited the Cathedral during their lunch break last Monday to rehearse and sing two carols with the younger cathedral choristers as part of the school’s preparation for recording a special CD of ten Christmas carols.

Choir master Jerome de Silva arranged the visit. “Two of our pupils have an elder brother who is in the cathedral choir. During one of our choir practices, a number of our children said they’d not been inside the cathedral, let alone sung in it. So I wrote to David Halls, Director of Music, explaining that our choir was preparing to record a CD and could we visit one lunchtime. David went a step further by suggesting his younger choristers could have a short rehearsal with and then sing alongside the St Martin’s choir. It was a truly wonderful experience for our children and so exciting for them to sing in the wonderful acoustic of the Cathedral alongside members of the cathedral choirs. They have been quite inspired by the whole visit!”

David Halls himself was “really impressed with the lovely sound the St Martin’s Choir made and I’m looking forward to hearing the CD.”

The CD, which also features a Brass Quintet from Bishop Wordsworth’s School accompanying some carols, will be launched at St Martin’s School on St Martin’s Day, Wednesday 11 November. It will be available to buy, price £5.00, via St Martin's School office, 01722 554300.
