The Department of Liturgy and Music
For almost 800 years, Salisbury Cathedral has been and remains a dynamic centre of Christian worship, prayer, community and mission, which exists 'for the glory of God and as a sign of his kingdom in the world'.
The Department of Liturgy and Music is responsible for the planning, administration, and coordination of each service and liturgical event which takes place in the cathedral on each day of the year. As well as over 1,000 regular daily, weekly and monthly services, there are about 250 special cathedral services each year. These include those organised on behalf of the many different organisations who use the cathedral for local, regional and national occasions and the various events and services run in conjunction with the Diocese of Salisbury. The annual Advent, Christmas and Epiphany processions attract a combined congregation of 7,500 people and as a result this year over £7,000 was given to various charities from these services alone.
In addition, the department is also responsible for coordination of the many Visiting Choirs who come to sing at services during Cathedral Choir holidays, for the annual series of organ recitals and for the series of lunchtime informal concerts held during the summer. Each year we hold an extremely popular Chorister Open Day and take part in the Southern Cathedrals Festival, which returns to Salisbury in July 2009.
The Precentor, Canon Jeremy Davies, is the member of Chapter responsible for the worship and music in the Cathedral.
The department is run by the Head of Liturgy and Music and includes:-
- The Music Department consisting of the Director of Music, Assistant Director of Music, Organ Scholar, Lay Vicars and Boy and Girl Choristers.
- The Vestry consisting of the Head Verger and a team of five vergers and three caretakers.
- Other support staff include the Sound Engineer, Publicity Officer, and the Department Secretaries.
