Young People's Groups

Sunday School

A Sunday School has been flourishing at Salisbury Cathedral for many years. Currently we have two groups

  • Sunday School, for up to 7 years (end of Year 2)
  • SOCKS for 7-11 years (Year 3 - end of Year 6)

These groups meet during the Sunday Morning Eucharist, during school term time. Programmes are published for parents and children each term.

The groups meet in the Cathedral School, or in the Meeting Room at the Gatehouse to the School. Both locations are a short walk from the cathedral, and children may be brought from about 15 minutes before the service begins.

Parents are welcome to stay with their children, especially when they are new. Parental help is essential for the youngest children, and this is organised on a rota basis.

The groups are normally escorted over to the cathedral in time to join their families for Communion. Activities are provided in the South Transept for the rest of the service.

New in 2007

Godly Play
From Spring 2007 we are introducing Godly Play once a month for the Sunday School and SOCKS groups. This is a well-established way of encouraging the use of quiet, imagination, and play to help people of all ages to grow in faith.

11-15 years
A group is starting for this older group in Spring 2007. Its members are encouraged to attend the Sunday Eucharist, and so the meeting will be at other times. As is appropriate for the age range, not everything has been decided for them, and so the group will decide its own name, and have a say in its choice of activities and times of meeting.

Other activities

The young people are involved in special activities in the cathedral during the year. For example:

  • Christmas worship
  • The Palm Sunday procession, in costume with the donkey
  • Holy Week activities, including a Family Service on Good Friday
  • Occasional all-age worship in the Cathedral

Older members may wish to take on a more responsible role by helping with the service.

At the wish of parents and children, the cathedral admits children to communion from the age of 7. From the age of 11 they are encouraged to prepare for confirmation.
