People at the Cathedral

Dean - The Very Reverend June Osborne

The Very Reverend June Osborne was installed as Dean on 1st May 2004. She is the first woman Dean of a medieval cathedral. The Dean is the senior member of the Chapter, recalling the fact that since 1075 the Cathedral at Salisbury has been governed by Canons (not monks), with the Dean presiding over the Chapter, with four Principal Persons charged with the day to day governance of the house.

Precentor - The Reverend Canon Jeremy Davies

The Precentor's role in the Cathedral goes back to 1091. Written by Osmund the second bishop, the job description has not changed much since then. The Precentor is the 'Preces Cantor' or 'singer of the prayers', in mediƦval times he was "to rule the choir". Today the Precentor is the canon responsible within the Chapter for the worship, liturgy (that is the order and performance of services) and the music. He is responsible for the daily round of Cathedral services and for the many special services that have to be arranged during the year.

Canon Chancellor - The Reverend Canon Edward Probert

Canon Edward Probert became Chancellor in April 2004. As has been the case since the earliest years of the cathedral, the Chancellor is responsible for its ministry of education and welcome. He also has oversight of the work of the Visitor Services Department, and the Education Centre.

Canon Treasurer - The Reverend Canon Mark Bonney

Canon Mark Bonney was installed as Treasurer in September 2004. The Canon Treasurer has responsibility for the fabric and 'treasures' (as distinct from the financial aspects) of the Cathedral and the Close and works closely with the Clerk of the Works and the Fabric Department on the care and maintenance of the Cathedral.
